What is Natural Collagen II:
Most collagen is denatured (altered) using a high-heat process that can break down its structure and diminish its potential benefits. Roex® uses a low-heat process that leaves natural structures intact. Similarly, Natural Collagen II is not treated with hydrogen peroxide, acids, bases or enzymes, since these treatments also alter the collagen’s structure and may diminish its benefits. Keeping the long chains of amino acids that form the collagen intact allows for optimal nutritional benefit.
Chicken Sternal Collagen Type II:
Roex opted to use chicken collagen because studies show that the avian variety is much more compatible with human physiology and has more positive results than similar studies using bovine Type II. Further, the chicken sternal collagen type II selected by Roex has protein content ranging between 55 and 65 percent for polypeptides and between 35 and 45 percent for mucopolysaccarides, levels unattainable in other Type II sources.

Why Use Unhydrolyzed, Low-Heat Denatures Type II Collagen:
When supplementing with Type II Collagen, the options vary from hydrolyzed or unhydrolyzed; denatured or undenatured; and chicken or bovine forms. Roex chose to use unhydrolyzed, low-heat denatured, chicken collagen in the formula.
- Hydrolysis: Refers to a chemical reaction that occurs resulting in the formation of one or more new compounds. Thus, hydrolyzed collagen is a modified form of collagen.
- Undenatured collagen: Raw collagen requires manufacturers to soak it in a bath of hydrogen peroxide, process it, and then sterilize it. The FDA states that dosages in excess of 10mg of undenatured collagen cannot be sold in a supplement form due to the affects it can have on the auto-immune system.
- High-heat denatured: Unlike the collagen you’ll get from Roex, most collagen is denatured using a high-heat process. This high heat can result in a loss of structure; the triple-helix DNA strand unwinds and the chains separate. When this denatured mass of tangled chains cools down, it soaks up the surrounding water like a sponge, forming gelatin.
- Bovine Collagen Type II: Sourced from bovine trachea and, although similar in biological makeup, has yielded limited benefits in many comparative studies.
